Celebrating Eid & Newroz 2026
22 April 2026
For the first time in 33 years, Eid and Newroz fell on the same day!
We marked this special moment by bringing the two celebrations together with a party at our Centre for members, volunteers, and staff. It was a really lovely day, full of music, food, dancing, and people enjoying being together.
Eid al‑Fitr, which means “Festival of Breaking the Fast”, marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. It’s celebrated in over 100 countries around the world and is a time when many Muslims focus on reflection, generosity, and coming together with family and community.
Newroz celebrates the arrival of spring and the start of a new year. Rooted in ideas of renewal, resilience, resistance, and hope, it’s also known as Newroz or Nawruz and is celebrated by Kurdish, Afghan, Iranian, and other communities across the Middle East and beyond.

Both Eid and Newroz are about community and new beginnings. While the core traditions are shared across cultures, each brings its own stories, traditions, and ways of celebrating – and it was really special to share that together at the Centre.
This year, Newroz came at a time when the conflict in Iran has been weighing heavily on many of our staff and Centre Members, so, coming together felt especially important.
Our short video below captures some of the energy from the day.

Celebrating Eid/Newroz is only possible because of the generosity of our community. If you would like to help make future events just as joyful, there are lots of ways to get involved.
Volunteer with Us
Our volunteers play a vital role in bringing people together – from helping prepare food and set-up the centre, to stewarding or just sharing a cuppa. Whether you can give a few hours or get involved more regularly, your time makes a real difference.
Donate to Support Future Celebrations
Donations help us cover the costs of community events like Eid and Newroz, as well as our year‑round work supporting refugees and people seeking asylum in Calderdale. Even a small donation helps us be able to provide welcoming spaces, practical and holistic support and moments of connection for people rebuilding their lives.
