Fuel Poverty Risks For Newly Granted Refugees – Download Our Leaflet

Newly recognised refugees can face significant challenges when moving into independent accommodation, including the risk of fuel poverty. To help raise awareness and support those working with refugees, St Augustine’s Centre has developed a new leaflet exploring these risks and how they can be addressed.

Two overlapping pages of St Augustine’s Centre’s fuel poverty leaflet for newly recognised refugees, displayed on a white background. The front page highlights fuel poverty risks, the 42-day move from asylum accommodation, and barriers including language, unfamiliar energy systems and financial pressures. The reverse provides pra
ctical guidance for service providers on energy bills, meters, heating efficiency, budgeting and accessing support.

The leaflet was informed by Dr Manon Burbidge, who’s PhD looked at the drivers and experiences of energy deprivation and infrastructural inequalities in UK refugee communities. Dr Burbidge conducted part of this vital research at St Augustine’s Centre where she recorded the experiences of our Centre Members and team. We combined these learnings with perspectives shared by our team and Centre Members in recent months as part of our Moving On Project, funded by the Lloyds Bank Foundation.

The project is a collaboration between St Augustine’s Centre, Calderdale Valley of Sanctuary and Calderdale Council aimed at addressing homelessness among newly granted refugees.

The leaflet highlights the particular challenges newly recognised refugees may face, including the short 42-day period to move out of asylum accommodation, unfamiliarity with the UK’s energy systems, language barriers and financial pressures.

It also offers practical guidance for service providers supporting people as they move into new homes.

We hope this resource helps to raise awareness of fuel poverty risks facing newly granted refugees and how services can respond.

You can download the leaflet below and use or share it with colleagues, partner organisations and anyone working to support refugees as they move into independent accommodation.
