What does a day at St Augustine’s Centre look like through the eyes of one of our hundreds of volunteers?
23 September 2025
Volunteering at St Augustine’s Centre means becoming part of something bigger. Everyone who walks through the door helps contribute to a sense of shared purpose. Among them are over 150 volunteers, many of whom are centre members, who actively give their time, energy, and compassion to support our community.
In this short reflection, Gill shares what volunteering at St Augustine’s Centre feels like on a “typical” day.

Gill’s Reflection
“An ordinary day. Outside, all is a bit “humdrum”. As I enter the grounds of St Augustine’s, and step into the day there for my 3-hour shift, a new energy is in the air.
I am joining a place of community-mindedness, vibrant with activity. People are here for all sorts of reasons – using the free shop for much needed clothing or footwear, looking for those ever-elusive rucksacks or a suitcase perhaps. Getting a haircut, learning English, to enjoy a delicious lunch, freshly cooked by a team of volunteers. Fixing up bikes, planting up the garden, a game of ping-pong, taking a quiet moment in the garden. Or they might come to talk something through with an adviser, dealing with a Home Office issue, finding a dentist, getting a SIM card.
At times it can seem like “organised chaos “, and all the above might be happening at once. But staff members have it all in hand, and welcome suggestions from volunteers. There is a clear ethos with the dignity of human beings at its heart.
Whatever your reason to be here, whatever your role, and whatever language you speak, this is a place offering respect, kindness to one another, a place where you can feel safe. We are all human. We all want to feel safe, connected with our community, not to be judged for being different, to find help and support when we are vulnerable or struggling.
At St Augustine’s, there is a sense of connection, mutual assistance, opportunities to learn new skills, and maybe put your well-honed skills to good use. I realise how privileged I am, and feel fortunate to be welcomed here, valued as a volunteer, one among 150 or so.
I have gained a broader perspective. Reflecting on the predicament of people fleeing their country in desperation and fear, leaving their roots, their loved ones and their old lives behind, surviving often very long traumatic journeys, I think to myself: this could be my family, this could be me.”

Gill’s Role at the Centre
Gill volunteers as one of our receptionists, welcoming everyone who comes through the doors of St Augustine’s Centre. She’s been part of the team since November 2024.
Her role involves being one of the first points of contact at St Augustine’s – answering phone calls, directing people to the right support and ensuring everyone feels welcomed from the moment they arrive. The foyer can be one of the busiest, most vibrant parts of the Centre (especially when our Welcome Café is open), and our receptionists help create a warm environment for all.
Like many of our volunteers, Gill brings not just practical help, but kindness and care to the Centre.
