Urgent Appeal for Hosts as Homelessness Among Refugees Surges

Recent government policy changes have sent shockwaves through the refugee support community, as newly-recognised refugees now face an alarming reduction in the time they have to secure housing and financial stability. The move-on process, which previously granted refugees 28 days' notice to leave their accommodation, has been slashed to a devasting seven days. This abrupt change, implemented by the Home Office, is causing a surge in homelessness among those who have just been granted refugee status, placing immense pressure on local authority homelessness services and exacerbating an already dire situation.

We have signed a letter to the Home Secretary and the Secretary for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, alongside numerous organisations, including the Refugee Council, NACCOM, Shelter, and Crisis, all united to demand our concern and call for the reversal of this harsh seven-day notice policy. In the open letter, we outline the devastating impact of homelessness and destitution on refugees forced to leave their accommodation. The signatories highlight the urgent need for the government to reconsider this policy shift, which is affecting the lives of many of those we personally support throughout our centre. The consequences of this policy are stark. With just seven days to find alternative accommodation and financial support, many refugees are finding themselves on the streets, in overcrowded and insecure temporary arrangements, or at the mercy of charitable organisations struggling to meet the rising demand for assistance.

Several organisations, including Refugees at Home, are now issuing an urgent call to action. They're appealing to individuals in towns and cities across the country to open their hearts and homes to those in need. If you have a spare room, bed, or even a sofa bed, you can make a life-changing difference by becoming a host.

Refugees at Home offers comprehensive support throughout the application and hosting process, ensuring that both hosts and guests have the resources they need to make the arrangement successful. This act of kindness can be lifesaving, particularly as winter approaches, and the harsh weather compounds the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness. By hosting a refugee, you're not just providing a roof over their head; you're offering hope, stability, and a chance for them to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity. Your support can help alleviate the burden on homelessness services and send a powerful message that compassion and solidarity prevail even in the face of adversity.
